Open Work Permit For Spouses

Open Work Permit For Spouses

Another extension for Open Work Permit Pilot for sponsored spouses and common-law partners in Canada

Since its introduction in 2014, this is fourth extension for the Open Work Permit Pilot. This applies to sponsored spouses and common law partners who are living in Canada. The pilot was to end on January 31st, 2019 but has been now extended till July 2020.

The open work permit is a work authorization that is not linked to any specific job or employer. However, employment in childcare and healthcare is restricted as it requires medical clearance. The eligibility criterion also requires the candidate to be holding a valid temporary resident status as either a visitor, student or worker and they should be living at the same address as their sponsor.

Applicants interested in obtaining the Open work Permit may submit the application along with the sponsorship application. Applicants whose sponsorship applications are in, may submit a work permit application separately.

Applicants who have already received approval in principle on your permanent residence application – meaning they have received a letter from IRCC stating they meet the permanent residence eligibility requirements, but they (or their family members) have not yet passed the medical, security and background checks – may apply for an open work permit online.

IRCC says that individuals who have a work permit obtained through the pilot program must apply for work permit extension before their current permit expires.
