Ontario Express Entry

Ontario Tech Draw Offers Nearly 1800 Invitations to Express Entry Candidates

Ontario’s new Tech Draw sent out 1,773 invitations to Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence in a draw held August 1st, 2019. Over the past 20 days, close to 3,400 total candidates have been encouraged to pursue provincial nomination for draws in this stream.

The Tech Draw is targeted towards Express Entry candidates with experience in one or more of six designated technology occupations the province has identified as high demand. The Tech Draw looks for candidates skilled in one of the six following occupations for the National Occupation Classification (NOC) skill level and skill type: software engineers and designers (NOC 2173), computer engineers (NOC 2147), computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174), database analysts and data administrators (NOC 2172), computer and information systems managers (NOC 0213), and web designers and developers (NOC 2175).

For the August 1st draw, the lowest score on the Comprehensive Ranking System was 435, a relatively low score. The Tech Draws began in July this year, making this draw the second of its kind so far. Both draws in total have issued 3,396 invitations to candidates.

Ontario is one of Canada’s most prosperous technology bases, especially in the cities of Toronto, Ottawa, and Waterloo.

In the past 5 years, 80,000 new jobs in the tech industry were created in Toronto alone. These Tech Draws are designed to meet the increasing need for jobs in this sector, making it a promising stream for hopeful immigrants.

The Ontario government can search through the federal Express Entry pool of candidates to find those with the desired skills and experience in technology, and invite them to apply for permanent residence in the province. For candidates to be considered for the draws, it is mandatory to have an existing profile under the federal Express Entry system.

Candidates with high scores on the CRS and with lots of experience in the field, and those with lower scores have both been granted invitations, or Notifications of Interest.

Several provincial streams like the Ontario Tech Draw allows candidates with lower CRS scores to improve their ranking and be invited to apply for permanent residence, based on the province’s need for candidates in certain job industries. Candidates who receive invitations through Ontario Tech Draws will see increased CRS scores, and be prioritized to receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence on the national and federal level.

Masters Graduate Stream

Ontario reopened and paused Masters Graduate Stream on the same day

Ontario reopened its Masters Graduate Stream (MGS) to 667 new registrations on Tuesday, April 30 and quickly reached its allocation in just a few hours.

The total intake limit of the MGS is 1000 in 2019. It was last opened on Tuesday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. with an intake limit of 1,000 registrations. Due to technical issues, the stream was closed at 11:42 a.m. Only a total of 333 candidates successfully submitted their applications within1 hour and 42 minutes.

The MGS is designed for international students with an eligible Ontario master’s degree to apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian permanent residence. It is one of the most popular immigration streams in Ontario because it does not require a job offer from an Ontario employer. Due to limited immigration allocation and a competitive employment environment, many graduates have to leave Ontario to seek immigration opportunities in other provinces.

Ontario's PNP

Ontario’s PNP nominations increase to 6900 in 2019

Ontario will be able to nominate 6,900 immigration candidates this year, the highest quota on record. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a new initiative on March 12, in which it mentioned that the 6,900 candidates include 6,650 primary nominations and an additional 250 places for intermediate skilled temporary foreign workers.

The 6,650 nominees will be filled, as in previous years, through various immigration streams under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), including the most popular Human Capital Priorities Stream.

The 250 places are mainly for temporary overseas workers who have been in Canada for a long time and offer them the opportunity to apply for permanent residence.

The allocation of OINP is 6,600 in 2018; already the most significant number approved through the PNP. OINP also received an additional 250 nominations at the end of last year, bringing the total to 6,850.

Demand from OINP is so strong that Ontario had asked for an additional 1,000 nomination quotas in 2019, hoping to raise the total to 7,600.

The increase in this year’s allocation reflects an increase in the Provincial Nomination Programannual targets for 2019 and 2020. This year, the PNP aims to absorb 61,000 new immigrants nationwide, an increase of 6,000 from its goal of 55,000 in 2018.

Nine Canadian provinces and two territories take part in the PNP, under which provinces nominate a pre-decided number of economic immigrants annually to become permanent residents.

Ontario is the most populated province in Canada, with 40% of the total population of Canada living here. It has the largest concentration of higher education resources and economic activity in the country.

A significant number of this year’s Ontario nominees are expected to be selected through the Federal Express Entry System. At this stage, Ontario has three nomination streams linked to Express Entry System: Human Capital Priorities Stream, French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream, and Skilled Trades Stream.

The Human Capital Priorities Stream was Ontario’s most active immigration stream in 2018, with 2,190 of the 6,850 nominations offered by Ontario last year. Last year’s take away winner in Ontario’s nominating program, was Employer Job Offer: International Student Stream, with 1,254 nominations. Next came the Masters Graduate Stream, which nominated 1,215 people. It is relatively easy for qualified international students, the only difficulty being to grab the quota.
